It is bad enough when you get sick and feel bad but even worse when you have to worry about if your medical insurance will pay for your prescriptions or not. Well, here is another case of insurance networks getting too big. Walgreens and Express Scripts, a medical insurance network provider, have had a contract in the past but that has ended as of December 31, 2011. What this means to customers is, as of January 1, 2012, they can no longer have their prescriptions filled and expect Express Scripts’ insurance plans to pay for them. This can be a burden and inconvenience for the patient who has been having their prescriptions filled at a Walgreens pharmacy. This action also includes the Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area.

Walgreens pharmacies attempted to negotiate With Express Scripts pharmacy provider network until the end of their contract without success. Walgreens wants to help and keep their customers so they have decided to extend a special discount on the annual membership for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. For only $10 per year a family can join the club and have everyone in the immediate family covered. This includes the spouse, dependents 22 years of age and under as well as their pets. Individuals may join for only $5. By joining the Walgreens club you will receive discounted prices as well as savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications, discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies. Find out more by following them at Walgreens on Facebook and Walgreens on Twitter pages.
